The Longest Sleep I and II, 2004
Incorporating themes of life, death and the subconscious, The Longest Sleep uses imagery that is both familiar and elusive. The Egyptian motifs recall ancient traditions- celebrations of life, death and afterlife. Invoking those earlier cultures that were more closely allied to the natural rhythms of existence, more accepting of transition and rites of passage. The idea of passing securely from one state of being to another- of being comforted and protected- creates the Reality.
The womb, the tomb, the cradle, the funerary boat; each of these vessels are designed to fulfill the same purpose- to hold or carry in life as in death. Some symbols are merely impressions of an idea, meant to suggest protection and comfort. While others are more intense and relevant in contemporary life, acting as memento mori, reminders that we all wear a death mask.
